Teaching Assistant in Negotiations and Influence

Part Time: As and when basis

Teaching Assistants (TAs) will supplement academic lectures through the delivery of group teaching and associated duties for students taking modules in the School of Management. Associated duties may include marking of coursework and exams.

A TA may be involved in one or more of the following activities:

  • Teaching assistance through the facilitation of seminars and/or workshops.
  • Class preparation and meeting with lecturers/module organisers.
  • After-class contact time with students, including time-tabled office hours.
  • Coursework and/or examination marking. (This may include marking for modules not taught on by a TA.) Marking duties include attendance at co-ordination meetings as required and are paid at different rates depending on type and length of scripts marked.
  • Dissertation supervision at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level(s).
  • To maintain records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance.
  • Weekly office hour(s) for student enquiries in the term taught plus additional hours in term 3 prior to the examination.
  • Examination marking duties corresponding to half the examination marking load of a full-time member of staff. Attendance in lectures for the courses taught.
  • Regular meetings with the module leader to discuss arising issues and problems.
  • Class teaching (in groups of approximately 15 – 25 students) for one or more course modules.
  • To uphold confidentiality in regards to students records and marks.
  • Actively following UCL policies, including equality and diversity.
  • Maintaining an awareness and observation of fire, health and safety regulations.
  • Marking of coursework submitted for the classes taught using solutions provided by the module leader.
  • Carrying out other duties within the scope, spirit and purpose of the role, as requested by the Head of Department.

It is anticipated that a significant number of TAs will be involved in both teaching and marking. There will, however, be some opportunities for duties involving teaching only, and/or marking only. The department will make every effort to match the allocation of teaching and/or other duties to an individual’s experience, and to take account of any preferences regarding individual modules and specific duties stated at the time of application. Once appointed, TAs will be expected to show reasonable flexibility in accepting the class teaching they are allocated. Also, since the number of students on some modules is not known until after the start of term, the department reserves the right to make last-minute adjustments to teaching loads or timetables, marking and other duties.

The allocation of class teaching to TAs will be determined by academic staff in the School. 

The post holder will report to the leader of the module/s they are supporting and the appointment will be available from 21 September 2022 to 30 June 2023 initially.

Educated to Masters level, or have equivalent qualifications or professional qualifications and experience, in Management and knowledge and experience in humanities, social science and/or management studies.
