Observation seminars form an integral part to the MSc Early Child Development and Clinical Applications (MSc Early Dev). This two-year MSc programme provides a comprehensive understanding of early child development (prenatal to 5 years of age), as well as how the early years impact later development. Psychoanalytic thinking is the primary organising approach but other theoretical and clinical perspectives are embedded throughout the teaching. Students are able to apply this understanding in a two-year observation of a baby in their home. Observation seminars aid students’ understanding about children’s development and mental health while also helping students to develop observational skills necessary for psychotherapeutic and clinical work.
The Seminar Leader will be responsible for teaching and marking. Teaching will include running two weekly group seminars during which students take turns to present observations of an infant and family. The Seminar Leader will facilitate discussions and help students make links to psychoanalytic theories and consider the importance of observation skills for future clinical and research careers.
