Campus: South Kensington, London

Closing date: 1st January 2024

The Electrochemical Science & Engineering Group is looking to hire a researcher to develop models of degradation mechanisms in electrodes, including silicon composite electrodes. This work will support the development of next generation solid state batteries (SSB). In order to design better SSB cells and battery packs, physics-based models are required, which capture the underlying physics that governs performance and degradation.

This position will focus on developing mechanistic and phenomenological models including electrochemical, thermal, chemical and mechanical behaviour for SSBs.
Although this post is primarily simulation based, the postholder will need to be involved in the parametrisation and validation of models from experimental data collected in the group.

Our research group is interdisciplinary has a cross-departmental network across four different departments within Imperial College London. We work at the interface between science and engineering of electrochemical devices. With over 50 postdoctoral & postgraduate researchers, we are a vibrant team with industrial and academic contacts.

Due to the nature of this role we will be shortlisting candidate as applications are received. We therefore reserve the right to close this vacancy as soon as a suitable candidate has been appointed. It is therefore advisable that you submit your application as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Duties and Responsibilities

You will be required to:

  • Develop suitable electro-chemo-mechanical finite element models of silicon graphite electrodes and Solid State Battery cells.
  • Use available data to identify and model relevant mechanisms that govern degradation.
  • Collaborate with the project partners to plan experimental tests on solid state batteries.

You will also be expected to plan and conduct your own work, publishing papers and presenting your work at national and international conferences.

Skills, knowledge and experience

  • Appointment at Assistant level requires a degree in a relevant subject area (Physical Sciences, Engineering or Mathematics). Research Associates will need to have completed a PhD (or equivalent) in a pertinent area.
  • You must have experience of working in a research environment, in academia or industry.
  • Experience of multiphysics modelling and modelling batteries is essential, as is knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures.
