About the role

The Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow – Laboratory Manager works as an experimental lab manager, conducting research and providing support, for the Experimental Laboratory for Finance and Economics (ELFE) laboratory.

The postholder works 80% of the time in the ELFE and 20% of the time in the Department of Economics.

For the ELFE duties, the post holder reports to the Scientific Director of ELFE via the ELFE administrator. For the departmental duties, the post holder reports to the Head of Department.

The post holder has the assistance of a PhD student who helps recruiting subjects, carrying out experiments and maintaining the ELFE subject database.

About you

The post holder will:

  • Provide programming, advice and support on all experiments undertaken in the ELFE laboratory.
  • Develop new research projects and to play a leadership role in the design of new experimental studies undertaken in the ELFE laboratory.
  • Commission equipment for the ELFE experimental laboratory and to be responsible for the day-to-day running of the labs.
  • Manage and maintain the ELFE subject pool using the Online Recruitment System for Economic Experiments (ORSEE).
  • Participate in data analysis and the writing up and dissemination of research.
  • Assist in applying for and managing external research funding.
  • Build and maintain the ELFE computer network and its links to UCL.
  • Publish in peer reviewed journals.
  • As duties and responsibilities change, the job description will be reviewed and amended in consultation with the post holder.
  • Carry out any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager or Head of Department/Division.

  • Maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and Health & Safety Regulations.

What we offer

This is a full-time, permanent post at Grade 7 or Grade 8. To be appointed at Grade 8, the candidate will be expected to have gained an independent research reputation; have a suitable publication record; and show evidence of knowledge transfer/exchange activities. In addition, the candidate will be expected to demonstrate potential in some or all of the following areas: leading a small team of researchers; being invited to give papers at conferences; serving on peer review Committee.

The UCL Salary range for Grade 7 is £40,524 to £48,763 per annum including London Allowance and for Grade 8 it is £50,085 to £58,895 per annum including London Allowance.

The UCL full-time working week totals 36.5 hours. Exact working arrangements are determined in discussion with the line-managers. Annual leave is 27 days per year plus six College closure days per year.
