Location: St Marys Hospital (Paddington) and Hammersmith (East Acton)

Job Summary

The post is funded by Imperial College/NHLI, with a view to supporting research in airway diseases – with a focus on a multi-centre clinical interventional trial (due to start in April 2023) in Eosinophilic Granulomatosis with Polyangitis (EGPA), as well as broader research activities in severe asthma.

You will support and help coordinate the wet lab and basic science activities involved in a clinical trial of patients with EGPA, under the guidance of the Chief Investigator – Professor Salman Siddiqui and in collaboration with key members of the scientific steering group – namely, Professor Mohamed Shamji and Professor Sebastian Johnston.

Working in partnership with the Imperial Clinical Trials Unit (ICTU) and under the guidance of of Professor Siddiqui, you will develop a laboratory manual to support the trial activities and relevant regulatory submissions to the REC/HRA/MHRA.

You will be part of a larger research team and will exhibit a high degree of competency in personal communication, record keeping, and ensure safety throughout their work. The post requires a high degree of proficiency in wet laboratory skills and an ability to work to deadlines.  

Duties and responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct your own scientific work with appropriate supervision/discussion with Professor Salman Siddiqui and key scientific steering group members- Professor Mohamed Shamji (single cell sequencing) and Professor Sebastian Johnston (viral challenge)
  • Take initiative in the planning and delivery of the wet laboratory science in the context of a multi-centre experimental medicine trial
  • Oversee/conduct the processing of bronchial biopsy, brush samples and lavage samples, with a view to delivering the core experimental medicine functions of the proposed clinical trial
  • Be familiar with the core technique – specifically multi-parameter flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, ALI culture and have an insight into single cell sequencing – that will enable an effective partnership with the Shamji Lab
  • Present your findings to colleagues and at conferences and submit publications to refereed journals as well as review articles and relevant book chapters
  • Co-develop grant applications to progress the research program to UKRI funders

Essential requirements

  • Research Associate: Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Molecular Biology, Immunology or a closely related discipline
  • Research Assistant: Near completion of a PhD (or equivalent) in Molecular Biology, Immunology or a closely related discipline
  • Have direct experience in the relevant techniques required in particular, human tissue/primary cell culture, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry and ALI culture
  • Have direct experience in handling/biobanking of clinical samples and be trained in/aware of working to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) in relation to clinical research studies
  • Have appropriate computing skills, including word-processing
  • Have a track record of high-quality research publications and will be able to demonstrate evidence of having supported the development of successful funding applications for research

Further Information

This is a Full time and Fixed term role for 2 years.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range of £36,694 – £39,888 per annum.
