Research Assistant/Research Fellow in Social Networks and Health

The UCL Institute for Global Health (IGH) is at the heart of UCL’s Grand Challenge of Global Health, the Institutes vision is for a world where international policy on global health is informed by world class research.

We are now seeking to appoint a Research Assistant/Fellow to lead quantitative data analysis on social networks and health based on the Sixhumene social network cohort study, funded by the Wellcome Trust and Royal Society. This work will be in collaboration with the study PI, Dr Guy Harling who is an Associate Professor in the Institute for Global Health (IGH) at UCL and a faculty member at the Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) in South Africa. The study is located in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and focuses on reducing risk of HIV transmission by identifying the key community members who influence the behaviour of their peers and family members.

The Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is an independent, transdisciplinary scientific research institute based across two campuses in the province of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) in South Africa. AHRI’s research combines population, basic, social, and medical sciences to understand and intervene in the health and well-being of South African communities.

The project will require extended travel to AHRI, and there may be potential to be based either in London or in South Africa.

The post is available immediately for 24 months in the first instance.

The ideal candidate will hold either a Masters (grade 6B) or PhD (required for grade 7) or equivalent experience in epidemiology, statistics, public health or a related subject. They will be able to demonstrate substantial experience of implementing quantitative analysis methods to analyse complex data structures and manage primary data; experience of using quantitative network analysis methods would be a substantial advantage. Knowledge of theories of social behaviour (especially those relevant to social networks), experience working in lower and middle-income settings and on sexual health topics are all desirable. The postholder will have written and preferably published academic manuscripts demonstrating an ability to clearly communicate their research to peers.
