Location: Charing Cross Campus, with hybrid working (the expectation is a minimum of 60% in the office).

Job Summary

The Unit, led by Prof Paul Aylin and Prof Alex Bottle, focuses on health services research using routine databases and electronic health records to investigate variations in the quality and safety of care and to evaluate policy. Projects cover a wide range of diseases and specialties, such as primary care, cardiology, emergency medicine and orthopaedics.

Duties and responsibilities

The post is funded by NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) to investigate the quality of care for people with a periprosthetic fracture, an increasingly common problem that can follow a hip or knee replacement. The project team, led by Alex Bottle, professor of medical statistics, is multidisciplinary, including surgeons, allied health professionals, and social scientists.

You will help to develop the quantitative methodology for the project and analyse relevant databases, particularly Hospital Episode Statistics and the National Hip Fracture Audit. In addition, you will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals and prepare study reports and present the findings.

Essential requirements

For this post, you should have experience in statistical analyses using real (i.e., not just simulated) data using software other than SPSS. You should preferably also have some knowledge of UK healthcare data. Previous experience (including the PhD period for Research Associate) conducting regression analyses is important.

It is essential that you have an MSc (Research Assistant) / PhD (Research Associate) in epidemiology, statistics, health economics or related quantitative field or a closely related discipline with elements of statistics. Equivalent experience will also be considered.

Further Information

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £36,694 – £39,888 per annum.

This is a full time and fixed term role until 30 Sep 2025, and you will be based in the Charing Cross Campus.
