Job summary

The School of Public Health, headed by Professor Deborah Ashby, OBE FMedSci, comprises the departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Public Health and Primary Care and Infectious Disease Epidemiology, as well as the Imperial Clinical Trials Unit and the Ageing Epidemiology Research Unit. The Departments of Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Epidemiology and Biostatistics also host two Medical Research Council (MRC) Centres, the MRC Centre for Global Infectious Disease Analytics and the MRC Centre for Environment and Health, respectively. The School is extensively involved with the Academic Health Sciences Centre and the Directorate of Public Health and Primary Care.

The School was rated top in the epidemiology and public health submissions to the UK’s 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) and is responsible for teaching a substantial part of the undergraduate and clinical curriculum to medical students. The School has a significant research portfolio and its total research grants and contracts income in 2020/21 was £34 million.

The School of Public Health offers a vibrant and academically rigorous environment hosting over 150 PhD students across multiple departments, each pursuing diverse research interests. Our PGR students are an integral part of our community and we are seeking a highly organised and dedicated individual to lead the complex administration required to support their studies. This role would suit an individual with a background in the coordination of complex programmes of academic study, perhaps with a focus on supporting PhD students.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible for coordinating the School’s research degree programmes effectively and efficiently in order to support an excellent student experience, and to help our academic staff to deliver a world class education. You will hold primary responsibility for all relevant aspects of the student journey and will be supported by the Director of Postgraduate Research, the Senior Tutor and the Education Manager.

Essential requirements

You must be educated to degree level (or equivalent) and have appropriate experience of complex administration in a university or education environment. Key to the role is excellent time management and organisational skills combined with critical attention to detail. The ability to establish effective working relationships with a diverse range of people is essential. You will be an excellent communicator who can take initiative and work independently. You need to be able to multitask under pressure to meet competing demands, working with a high degree of accuracy and consistency.
