Job Summary

Are you looking for an exciting leadership opportunity in the field of medical education? We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to be the Head of Operations Cumbria School of Medicine

Imperial College London and University of Cumbria have formed a partnership to open a new medical school to develop and deliver the Cumbria School of Medicine. The first students start a bespoke 4-year post graduate MBBS programme in 2025/26. Applying Imperial’s expertise in medical education and University of Cumbria’s experience in training nurses, midwives and other professions allied to medicine, we aim to produce doctors who are embedded in their local community ready to contribute to services across the region and beyond.

As the Head of Operations Cumbria School of Medicine you will work closely with the Head of School, and in collaboration with colleagues and partners across the University of Cumbria, Imperial College London and the NHS, to turn the strategic vision of the Cumbria School of Medicine into an operational reality.

This is an exceptional opportunity to help shape the delivery of this unique Medical School, which is a collaboration between Imperial College London and the University of Cumbria.

Duties and responsibilities

The Head of Operations Cumbria School of Medicine (CSM) is a senior leadership role within the Faculty of Medicine holding overall administrative responsibility for CSM. The post holder will:

  • Lead the CSM operational staff, supporting the CSM Head of school to deliver the strategic priorities and translating these into operational excellence.
  • Manage and coordinate interfaces with external influences, such as the NHS partners across northwest England. The post holder will be required to ensure that this, and other external influences, do not impact adversely on student experience.
  • Provide day-to-day management of the CSM annual financial plan and budget
  • Maintain a close working relationship with the medical student body to support the student experience.

Essential requirements

The successful candidate will have substantial experience of senior managerial/ leadership responsibility in national undergraduate activities within medical education or other health related / postgraduate courses. They will be able to demonstrate previous experience of building and maintaining successful relationships with internal stakeholders / colleagues, and of leading an inclusive team.

This is a full-time, open-ended post based in Cumbria (Carlisle), with some travel to London required.
