About the School of Medical Sciences
The School of Medical Sciences is one of the largest Schools within the Faculty of Medicine, and across the University. It is a vibrant school, a place of work for over 240 staff, more than 150 higher degree students, and many thousands of undergraduate students. Occupying the Wallace Wurth and with Links to both the Lowy Cancer Research Centre and the Biological Sciences Building, the School sits at the nexus between discovery science and clinical practice. Core research facilities exist within this Biomedical Science precinct to fully support virtually every discipline in contemporary biomedical research.
The School was formed in 2001 following the amalgamation of the previous Schools of Anatomy, Physiology & Pharmacology and Pathology. Building on these foundations we have been able to draw on a rich heritage of research and teaching excellence integrating these and other contemporary disciplines, providing exciting learning opportunities for our students to learn and creating an innovative research ecosystem amongst our staff.
Why your role matters
As the Head of Anatomy & Professor (Level E), you will be expected to provide academic leadership and foster excellence in research, innovative teaching, and engagement activities in the anatomical sciences. In addition, this key strategic role is expected to help develop and lead an innovative and forward-thinking Anatomy teaching program, one that delivers for the future of Anatomy teaching and its integration into both medicine and biomedical programs.
The role of Professor reports to the Head of School, School of Medical Sciences and has a number of direct reports within the Department.
Who you are:
To be successful you must have:
- A PhD in a related discipline (e.g. anatomy or anatomical sciences).
- Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
- Demonstrated leadership and successful achievements in education design, development and delivering at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, especially in teaching in the anatomical sciences
- Demonstrated success in initiating curriculum development and improvement, and in implementing new educational technologies and blended/hybrid delivery methods.
- Evidence of professional development of teaching practice in self and others with the ability to advance and lead an inclusive culture of excellence in learning and teaching.
- Outstanding interpersonal, communication, relationship building and organisational skills and the capacity to work collaboratively and contribute to the School’s service and engagement activities, and to build partnerships with the profession, industry, and/or wider community
- A demonstrated capacity to provide academic leadership and mentoring to colleagues in the anatomical sciences, including early career academics
- Experience in successfully recruiting and/or supervising high calibre HDR students, and in chairing and/or participating in HDR confirmation and review panels
- Demonstrated capacity to lead by example in supporting equal opportunity and equity, diversity and inclusion policy and programs as they relate to staff and students.
- Proven leadership in developing significant productive relationships and engagement with industry and the community, with success in attracting significant industry funding.
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
