Ground Cafe at Queen Mary University of London, is at the heart of our Mile End campus. It’s a favourite meeting place for students and staff leading to it being a busy and thriving business which provides customers with a range of cold/hot food and drinks, with an emphasis on outstanding customer service. Ground Café also provides hospitality services for a range of events throughout the year. We are continuously looking to improve and expand our offering to our customers., which is why we are looking for someone who would like the opportunity to help shape decisions, trial new ideas and enjoy the freedom to make positive developments and changes. Sustainability and ethical awareness are paramount to what we do here at Queen Mary Students’ Union.

The Ground Café Manager will oversee the day-to-day operational management of the café, driving sales growth, maximising customer satisfaction, whilst striving to maintain a culture of excellence. You’ll also work on some exciting new projects, overseeing the introduction of our new online click and collect offer, to help alleviate queues during our busy periods and to therefore speed up the service.

You should be a ‘hands on’ approachable leader who is committed to the values of the organisation, maintaining a safe, friendly environment with the student experience at its heart and be able to manage around 20 part-time staff. This role’s hours would be predominantly Monday – Friday, daytime shifts, with the flexibility to adapt working hours if it suits the needs of the business.

Applicants should have excellent communication skills and have the ability to work with a wide range of people.  Candidates must have the ability to work well under pressure, prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.

Ground Café is part of Queen Mary Students’ Union that exists to improve students’ lives and strives to be at the heart of the experience of all students. The Students’ Union offers a range of charitable and commercial services including a volunteering service, Sport & Fitness Centre, bars and shops. The Students’ Union is also responsible for representing and supporting the 28,000 students who make up the diverse community of students at Queen Mary.

This is a permanent post with a starting salary between £28,208 – £34,733 per annum inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days annual leave, plus University closure days including bank holidays and 4 additional close days which normally fall over the Christmas period. We also offer a generous pension scheme, interest-free season ticket loan, cycle to work scheme, employee assistance programme and free membership of the on-campus Fitness Centre.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.
