ABOUT US

Transforming lives through excellent education

London Met is an extraordinary institution. Equity and social inclusion have always been our driving principles, and it’s what makes us so unique. Our organisation is distinctive, both in its eclectic and diverse community of students and staff, and also for its historical role in serving some of London’s most deprived boroughs. Everything we do is underpinned by our philosophy that an individual should have the opportunity to transform their life through the power of education.

Equipping our students with the tools for their future is at the heart of our academic offering. We pride ourselves on providing our students with access to a wealth of opportunities and professions. Our graduates benefit personally, but also contribute their unique perspectives to society, culture, public service, and the economy in all areas of London, the UK and the world.

Library Services and Special Collections support the University’s learning, teaching, and research activities providing access to educational and research resources, vibrant learning spaces, study facilities and specialist support in making the best use of information in all forms.  With a friendly and professional online and face-to-face enquiry and information service and 24/7 access to online resources, Library Services is central to the student experience.

ABOUT THE POST

We are seeking a Duty Librarian to work 12 hours a week all year round in our operations team providing a front-line library service in a forward-looking and fast-moving environment that places our users at the centre of its continuous improvement.

You will work at both our Aldgate and Holloway libraries. During term time, you will work two shifts (3pm–7pm) between Monday and Friday as well as one shift at the weekend (12pm–4pm). During university vacation periods, you would work three shifts (3pm–7pm) Monday to Friday.

You will deal with user enquiries received face-to-face and online, supervise Library Assistants and be responsible for delegation of tasks and performance management. You will be a qualified librarian or have demonstrable experience and relevant skills in place of formal qualifications, answer subject-related enquiries and be able to identify when to refer specialist or complex enquiries to appropriate colleagues.

We are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal skills who has a genuine interest in helping and supporting others in a customer-focused environment. You will be comfortable using and learning a variety of technologies and applications. You will have the ability to prioritise and organise your own workload and those of assigned staff, along with a reliable and positive attitude to work. You will have experience of working independently without direct supervision and enjoy working collaboratively in a team and sharing knowledge with others.

The successful candidate will have previous demonstrable experience of working in a customer facing role and academic libraries and meet the criteria set out in the person specification.

Hours of work and location may alter to reflect the changing needs of the service.

Interviews due to be held on in week commencing 21 August 2023
