Background:
Founded by Prof. Jimmy Choo and Stephen Smith, JCA has quickly become one of the most well regarded and sought after fashion schools in the UK. Frequently covered, globally, in premium titles such as WWD, Business of Fashion, Financial Times, Wall St Journal, Jing Daily and Vogue, the institution unashamedly seeks to find, nurture and launch new designers through its innovative approach to education and incubation.
The list of achievements within the 18 months of opening its inaugural Mayfair campus are impressive and undoubtedly hard to follow, with Faculty that include international royalty to acclaimed designers who balance academic careers alongside their professional practice. It was out of great interest and curiosity then that Queen Camilla chose to visit the Academy in 2023 and to find out more.
With its flagship campus based in the heart of London’s prestigious Mayfair, the Academy seeks to find, support and launch entrepreneurial fashion designers through an intimate, learner-centred approach that is focused on professional practice delivered within a specialist incubation environment.
The Academy offers both undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in a range of practice-based fashion design and entrepreneurship programmes that allow learners to pursue a very high degree of specialism.
There are two routes available to prospective students: 1) an immersive, professional practice experience with incubation in Mayfair, and 2) a timetabled professional experience within an artisan Maker Space in West London.
Inclusive in its approach, in terms of reach and scholarships given, the Academy seeks to support the best and most gifted designers to fulfil their ambitions and transition from higher education into entrepreneurship and/or employment.
As a selective institution, recruitment is based on academic and creative potential expressed through prior qualifications and portfolio and behaviours and attitudes through academic interview and engagement.
