The Student Advice Service is a high demand service for all queries relating to financial support, Student Loans, admissions, enrolment and general queries from staff, students and members of the public. The Deputy Manager will oversee the day-to-day running of this service, providing guidance and support to the team whilst designing and implementing service development under the supervision of the Student Services Manager.

The role has a focus on supporting vulnerable students through the student journey, especially on matters relating to their funding. You will work in consultation with other departments including Wellbeing Services to influence decisions and design specific student support.

You will be relied upon as a finance expert and to offer a more realistic representation of the student experience, using your influence and help shape the movement of the University.

You will have experience in managing members of staff, monitoring leave and sickness absences, arranging suitable working patterns, boosting staff morale and completing development reviews and appraisals. We are looking for a Deputy Manager who leads by example and is flexible in their approach in managing a service with a diverse workforce.

You will have experience working in the Higher Education sector, within a student support or advisory capacity. You will be required to take lead of complex finance issues with vulnerable students, so a strong understanding of common financial support packages and the Student Loans Company (mainly SFE) regulations would be required.

This role has a leadership position in the UCAS Clearing cycle, which is a crucial element of Birkbeck’s recruitment strategy. You will have experience and understanding of University admissions, which will allow you to lead on the applicant-facing elements of the Clearing process.

To be successful in this role, you will have a proven track record of providing a high level of customer support in the Higher Education context, adding to or leading on service development, and a passion for finding creative solutions to complex problems

Remuneration:

Grade 7 of the College’s London Pay Scale which is £39,173 rising to £44,775 per annum.

The salary quoted is on the College’s London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.
