
STATEC Research intends to recruit a junior economist with good programing skills for the position of Data and Research Assistant in Economics. Data or computer scientists will also be considered. The successful candidate will join the Research Department at STATEC, the Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg. The department carries out policy-oriented analysis and research in the fields of productivity, entrepreneurship and quality of life, within international scientific networks. The successful candidate will provide assistance to the team’s various endeavours. They will perform data-related duties. They will manage and maintain data resources effectively, ensure data quality and the replicability of processes, develop and maintain quality code and associated documentation. They will contribute to the department’s research projects. The successful candidate is expected to have a solid foundation in statistics and programming.
This is a full-time position with an initial appointment for 2 years, which may evolve into a permanent role. We offer an attractive salary and encourage professional development.
Candidates are expected to have a Master degree in Economics, Data Science, Quantitative Social Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or Computer Science. For candidates without a degree in economics, some knowledge in economic subjects is highly desirable. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
Main tasks/responsibilities will include:
- Prepare, maintain and update datasets for statistical and economic analysis, mostly at microeconomic level.
- Process and transform large datasets using statistical programs.
- Contribute to design and implementation of surveys to compile research datasets.
- Perform data quality control, and check compliance of research output with statistical disclosure rules.
- Develop and maintain STATA and R codes for data processing, as well as documentation of procedures and datasets.
- Contribute to build guidelines on data use and coding.
- Provide assistance with the preparation of reports, manuscripts, and presentations, including performing quantitative economic analysis.
Required skills are:
- Good written and oral communication skills in English. French/German are an asset.
- Proficiency in programming languages for statistics and econometric analysis. Knowledge of STATA and R is required. Python is an asset.
- Knowledge of machine learning techniques is an asset.
- Understanding of statistical disclosure control (SDC) techniques and willingness to expand their competence on the topic. Experience in SDC application to research output is a clear advantage.
- Some knowledge of the legislative framework for data use is an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, team player, ability to work autonomously and to meet tight deadlines.
