Job description

The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine is seeking an experienced and highly competent manager to lead the professional services team in the Centre for Education with experience of strategy development and delivery, along with extensive business operations experience working with finances, HR, and research in a higher education context.  

The Centre was first established in 2017/18 to enhance education practice across the Faculty’s programmes through supporting the development of good practice and pedagogy relevant to the Faculty’s disciplinary areas, so improving the student experience and learning outcomes. Candidates should be aware that the student-facing programme management (including timetabling, delivery, assessment, quality assurance) is the responsibility of a separate team in the Faculty, the Faculty Education Services. The Centre supports the Faculty’s delivery of its education, primarily the financial management and staff resource. A background in education programme management is not required to be successful in this post. 

The Centre Manager works closely with the Centre Director, with input from the Faculty’s Deans of Education, to review and develop the Centre’s strategy to support academic and teaching staff in the development of curriculum, delivery, and assessment to maximise student engagement and learning. A key priority is to increase the Faculty’s pedagogical research relevant to its education programmes, with the ambition of becoming a nationally- and internationally recognised hub of education excellence for biomedical sciences, providing an environment for ongoing professional development and innovation in teaching.

The Centre Manager leads the professional services team in the Centre which supports the Centre’s technical and business operations, with the Centre’s Educational Technical Manager leading the technical support of the Faculty’s laboratory practicals. The Centre Manager line manages the Centre’s Operations Manager who is responsibility for the day-to-day delivery of administrative operations for the Centre and who manages the wider operations team. The Centre Manager is responsible for the overall resourcing and long-term sustainability of the Centre, working with the Centre Director and the Deans of Education to identify future needs and how to respond to these. The Centre Manager will write business cases for academic, teaching and professional services staff and guide the Operations Manager in the recruitment and appointment to positions. The Centre Manager works closely with the Deans of Education in managing the complex staff and non-staff budgets of the Schools of Bioscience Education and Medical Education which support the delivery of the Faculty’s education programmes.

In addition, the post holder is responsible for monitoring progress against key performance indicators, financial planning and reporting, leading formal audits of the Centre and other formal submissions. The post holder will instigate and strengthen Centre interactions with colleagues across the Faculty and university, and with external partners.

Successful candidates are expected to have management experience, have strong communication and numeracy skills, and have experience of developing and delivering a strategy. Candidates should have experience of leading initiatives that have strategic importance in a complex organisation.

As with all professional services posts in the Faculty, there is an expectation that the post holder will work at least 40% FTE on campus, determined by business need. The post is based primarily at Guy’s campus, although there may be a requirement to work at other campuses/sites.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.

This is a full-time post – 100% full time equivalent.
