The UCL Institute of Ophthalmology conducts cutting-edge research, attracting principal investigators, post-doctoral fellows and MD/PhD students of the highest international calibre to a stimulating research environment.

The Institute is committed to a multi-disciplinary research portfolio that furthers an understanding of the eye and visual system linked with clinical investigations targeted to specific problems in the prevention and treatment of eye disease.

The Moorfields Biobank, a HTA licenced biobank based at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, stores human eye tissue for use by researchers to further our understanding of eye diseases. We are now planning to increase the number and types of human eye samples that we collect and store. The successful candidate will be central to the successful expansion of the current Biobank

About the role

The Biobank Technician will provide day to day technical support in a range of activities associated with the Moorfields Biobank at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.

The post, funded by Moorfields Eye Charity and the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre at Moorfields Eye Hospital, will include collecting, processing and storing human tissue samples, maintaining comprehensive and accurate sample records, ensuring all activities are carried out according to the Biobank SOPs, assisting the local HTA Designated Individual and Person(s) Designated to carry out regular audits of collected stored samples and other administrative duties required to support the wider team, including, ordering, general laboratory maintenance, writing SOPs, training facility users, invoicing etc.

The post is available from 01 October 2023 until 30 September 2025, in the first instance.

About you

A BSc or MSc in a Biomedical science, experience working in a research laboratory, good awareness of the regulations on the use of human tissue for research (Human Tissue Act) 2004, information governance and ethics approval, excellent IT skills, and an ability to effectively use new software or IT systems and the ability to adhere to SOPs and work meticulously with attention to detail.
